The 2.5 mm² copper core meets the current AS/NZS 3001.2:2022 recommendation for supply leads over 15 metres to a caravan. When to Use This Model

Note: We do not offer the thicker 2.5mm² core on our shorter leads as it is not required for leads 15m or under (the resistance is lower when running a shorter distance so there is nothing to compensate for).

Why a thicker core matters: the detail

Voltage drop is just resistance doing its thing: the longer and thinner the copper, the more voltage you lose getting to the van. Over 20 metres at a full 15 A, a 1.5 mm² lead loses about 3% and a 2.5 mm² about 1.8%. Both sit inside Australia's 5% limit, so neither is unsafe. The difference shows up in three places.

Starting, not running. A compressor pulls up to eight times its running current for a split second as it starts. That surge across thin copper makes a much bigger dip than normal running does — enough, sometimes, for the compressor to stall and trip its overload. You come back to a warm van with nothing obviously wrong.

Headroom you don't control. That 5% is shared between the caravan park's wiring, your lead and your van. A long run from the park's pole spends some of it before your lead is even plugged in. Thicker copper leaves more of the budget for the parts you can't do anything about — which is why the same setup can be fine at one park and marginal at the next.

Heat. At a full 15 A a 1.5 mm² lead sheds around 100 W of heat along its length; a 2.5 mm² sheds about 60 W. Fully unwound, both handle it comfortably. Wound on the reel, neither does — which is why we say to run it out every time, whichever lead you own.

Worth saying plainly: most vans rarely draw a full 15 A. On 20 metres of 1.5 mm², a typical load of lights, a fridge and a charger is around 1% drop. If that's your setup, the 1.5 mm² lead is a perfectly good choice.
